Create Dangerously by Edwidge Danticat
The take home message in Create Dangerously: everything is cultural and everything is politics. Like when your prodigal cousin dies of AIDS and his body cannot be shipped back to Haiti until his alien status is legalized. In this collection of essays, Edwidge Danticat stresses reading and writing as a revered civic duty and a productive act of defiance. Though centered around pivotal Haitian events like the executions of Marcel Numa and Louis Drouin as well as the 2009 earthquake, Create Dangerously is a call to all immigrant artists to write until masses are galvanized and societies are changed for the better.
Crossing the Heart of Africa by Julian Smith
The real "heart" in Smith's book is the love story that palpitates behind his cross-continent journey through the motherland. More than just a copycat of Ewart Grogan, who made the trek over a hundred years before, Julian Smith is an historian and an adventurer. This magical account reminds us that sometimes the farther we travel, the closer we come to home.

Do You Tip for Pick Up?
I asked several of my colleagues this question over the past few weeks and all of them said no. Only for being waited on a table. But, I could have sworn that the servers at the restaurant across the street from my apartment were giving me the stinkeye when I picked up a swordfish entree to go without greasing the cashiers with a few dollars. Or maybe it was just me. I have to admit I get this overwhelming urge to compensate for stereotypes. As a black man, I never want to get caught in the no-tipping zone. That's why in taxis, at hair salons, for deliveries, I always give a little extra something than normal. I don't want to be that stereotype "perpetuator" so to speak. Maybe that urge has got me paranoid. What do you think?

Mentos/Coca-Cola Experiment
Remember a little while ago when people were going crazy over that phenomenon of dropping Mentos in a bottle of Coca-Cola to make it fizz? Well, here's some old footage (I got my braids in it!) of me conducting that little science experiment in our living room...good times.
Need something more official, eh?

How to Fold Your Shirts the Japanese Way
Would you clown me if I said that this has changed my life?
Skip It!
From the reminiscers who brought you My Buddy, here's Skip It!
I used to promise my sister to buy her this if she did all my chores. How inhumane of me.

Let's Pause and Remember "My Buddy"
Rest happily, little tike. I know you're somewhere rotting peacefully in some throwaway metaphor...
Miguel "Sure Thing"
The tunnel is bright for Miguel as he teases us with another single "Sure Thing" off his new album All I Want is You that hit stores yesterday. The screwed ad libs provide a nice touch on this romantic recliner. Listen to the track and cop the album.
